Dusty is een wezen met een bewustzijn. Alles wat ze doet heeft ergens mee te maken. Dat is echter niet altijd even duidelijk voor ons, omdat ze in heel andere fysieke omstandigheden leeft dan de onze. Dat moet, in plaats van haar schijnbaar onsamenhangend gedrag toe te schrijven aan toevalsanimalismen, altijd in gedachten gehouden worden wanneer geprobeerd wordt haar te begrijpen.

In 1986 I got into whales by a fluke. It caught my attention as a sculptor and ever since I have cast my soul into the aquatic dimension. To share the cetacean subsistence and render their fancy into my sculpture I started off swimming their way with a monofin and a self-conceived 'waterwing'.
In 1990, by courtesy of Ten Bel, I swam with pilot whales at Tenerife. Since 1992 each summer I swam with the Irish dolphins Fungi and Dusty. This has turned out quite a number of sculptures in wood, a selection of which you can find depicted on these pages. Since 2002 I have documented my encounters with Dusty and mixed them with tales of the Irish impulse.
Also an increasing fleet of underwater video's can be called up.
So if you surf these pages you'd better first take a deep breath to experience the actual rapture of the dolphin.
Biography
In 1996/97 I did a bow-wave project in a Dutch dolphinarium and got permission to experiment with toys for dolphins. These toys were based on the waterwing and turned out to be pretty popular. The element completing my instrumentarium since half a year, is the dorsal fin. It is especially helpful in submerging.
The WaterWing: Dolphin-swimming
Would you like to swim like a dolphin? With a monofin on both your feet you can generate a drive that easily pushes you halfway out of the water and with a WaterWing you can almost equal the maneuverability of a dolphin.
Comparatively speaking swimming is hardly worth while. Humans are simply not built for it and the major part of our effort is lost on useless waves and slackening whirls. On the one hand water is too evasive to effectively push off from, but on the other it builds up too much resistance for a swift passage.
A physical approach to dolphinswimming
Most of us know swimming as an activity you try to make the most of. The ratio of exertion to effect is lower and more limited than we experience in most of our actions. This is due to the fact that our bodies have not evolved towards an aquatic existence. We lack the build to deal efficiently with the resistance of water. Most experienced swimmers have felt the thrust that flippers can provide.

Dusty is a sentient being. Everything she does relates to something. That isn't always clear to us, because she lives in very different physical circumstances from our own. This should be kept in mind at all times when trying to understand her, instead of ascribing apparently unrelated behaviour to random animalisms.

Soms is een 'Dolphin Address' een huwelijk van zin en onzin die ik op uiteenlopende momenten onbekommerd of juist indringend heb vastgelegd op mijn praatomaatje. Een andere keer bevrijdt het zich monumentaal uit mijn ongeduldige vingertoppen. Dan weer laat iedere zin zich moeizaam veroveren als in een moeilijk boek.

Sometimes a 'Dolphin Address' is a marriage of sense and nonsense that on various moments I have carefree or rather, piercingly recorded on my talk mate. At other times it liberates itself monumentally from my impatient fingertips. Then again every sentence needs to be conquered, like in a complicated book.

In 1986 ben ik door een staart aan de walvis geraakt. Deze trok mijn aandacht als beeldhouwer en sindsdien heb ik mijn ziel in het water geworpen.
Om het walvissenbestaan te kunnen delen en hun levenslust weer te geven in mijn beelden ben ik gaan zwemmen met een monovin en een zelfgemaakte 'watervleugel'.
In 1990 heb ik, op uitnodiging van Ten Bel gezwommen met Grienden bij Tenerife. Sinds 1992 heb ik elke zomer met de Ierse dolfijnen Fungi en Dusty gezwommen. Dit heeft een behoorlijk aantal beelden in hout opgeleverd, waarvan een selectie is afgebeeld op deze pagina's. Sinds 2002 heb ik mijn ontmoetingen met Dusty beschreven en gemengd met verhalen van Ierse komaf.
Ook kun je een toenemende vloot van onderwater video's ophalen.
Als je dus over deze pagina's surft kun je beter eerst diep ademhalen om de ware vervoering van de dolfijn te ervaren.
Biografie
Carrièreplanning en kunstenaarschap zijn eigenlijk nooit beschouwd als een erg sympathieke combinatie. Vooral mist men hier de spontaniteit en bovendien moet er toch zeker behoorlijk geleden worden. Op al deze punten scoor ik uitzonderlijk hoog. Ik studeerde Sociologie en was helemaal niet van plan om kunstenaar te worden.
